Dental check-up
Most people have a dental check-up every 6 months. However, some people may need to go more often, some less often.
The Plaza Health dentist will suggest when you should have your next check-up based on individual dental needs.
The time between check-ups can vary from 3 months to 1 year.
Why do I need a dental check-up?
A dental check-up allows the Plaza Health dentist to see if you have any dental issues and to keep your mouth healthy. Leaving dental problems untreated could make them more difficult to treat in the future. Treating problems early makes them easier to solve.
What happens during my appointment?
During your dental check-up the Plaza Health dentist will:
- Examine your teeth for cavities
- Examine your gums for gum disease
- Examine your mouth for signs of oral cancers
- We will ask about your general health and any problems you’ve had with your teeth, mouth or gums since your last visit
- We will give you advice on taking care of your oral health
- Discuss any treatment you might need & give you a treatment plan
- Discuss a date for your next visit,
How often should I see the dentist?
After your initial check-up with us, the Plaza Health dentist will recommend the date for your next appointment. The time to your next check-up could range from 3 to 12 months.
On average most people need professional teeth cleaning every 6 months and a full dental check-up every 12 months.
If you are in a risk group or have been struggling with some issues we may need to see you more frequently.
How much does check-up cost?
A standard dental check-up: €50
A standard dental check-up and cleaning together: €100
A standard cleaning: €75
A PRSI subsidised check-up and cleaning costs €15 but we will need to check if you qualify.
There can be some additional costs if extra dental care is provided as part of your check-up. For example, jaw x-rays, prescriptions, and digital scans all incur additional care but would not normally be needed.
If the Plaza Health dentist recommends additional dental treatment, we will provide you with an estimate of the cost ahead of time.
To minimize the need for dental treatments make sure you have a good diet and brush, floss and use a good mouth wash as part of your daily routine.
What will happen if we find something wrong with your teeth?
The Plaza Health dentist will tell you right away, explaining in clear language what the issue is. We can show you with digital photographs and x rays what the issues are, and how they will impact your oral health.
We may recommend additional procedures, or refer you to a specialist. For example, if you would like your teeth straightened, we can refer you to Dr Ronan Perry, a Specialist Orthodontist.
