Step 1. An initial Dental Check inspection

Firstly, at Plaza Health your dentist will examine your teeth and gums. During this inspection, the dentist will check your mouth for signs of trouble, such as gum disease (gingivitis) and dark spots on the teeth (potential fillings).

Before we begin, we will ask you if you have any specific concerns about your mouth, teeth, gums, and throat.

X-rays

If during your check up the dentist sees something that concerns him, he may decide to take a closer look with an x-ray. X-rays are very straightforward and they help identify the following issues:

  • Bone loss in your jaw
  • State of fillings, crowns, veneers, on-lays and implants etc
  • Mouth abnormalities
  • Tooth decay/ fillings
  • Tumors & cysts
  • Gum disease
  • Loose teeth

At Plaza Health all new patients have a comprehensive set of x-rays taken to document the mouth and keep a record of your dental health.

Step 2. Removing tartar and plaque

Next, your dentist will remove the tartar and plaque that builds up on your teeth and along the gum line. If left untreated these can cause cavities and gum disease.

Many people suffer from a degree of gum disease, so don’t be surprised if there’s some bleeding during this process, its normal and will pass. You may feel a little sore after step 2, but it soon passes.

Step 3. Polishing

Now that the plaque and tartar have been removed its time to clean away stains from your teeth. The dentist will use a powerful gritty toothpaste to polish away stains on the surface of your teeth. The gritty toothpaste will also polish your teeth, leaving them feeling smooth and shiny. If your teeth are still stained you might want to consider whitening.

Step 4. Floss!

Regardless of what you might have heard, flossing is an important part of your dental routine. The Plaza Health dentist will show you how to do this properly and point out any areas that need extra care and attention.

Step 5. Fluoride

For patients who are at a high risk of tooth decay, it may be necessary to apply a fluoride coating to the teeth. This gives your teeth extra protection against decay. However, most patients don’t need this since fluoride is found in drinking water, toothpaste, and mouthwashes.

Step 6. One last look

To wrap things up your Plaza Health dentist will give your teeth, gums, mouth, and throat one last inspection. Assess any teeth grinding, existing fillings and such. If need be further appointments will be made to deal with any issues that might have been identified.
