A dental check up and cleaning, is the most common dental appointment patients have.
It’s important for the Dental House Smithfield dentist to assess your dental & oral health, this appointment is used to create a treatment plan for you.
At Dental House Smithfield we recommend you have a dental check-up every 6 months, but some patients might require a dental check up more often.
Why do I need a dental check-up & cleaning?
A dental check-up allows the Plaza Health dentist to see if you have any problems with your teeth, and treat any fillings you might have. Leaving fillings or gum problems untreated could make them more difficult to treat in the future, so it’s best to fix problems early, or prevent them all together!
What happens during a dental check-up?
At your check-up, our dentist will: Examine your teeth, gums & mouth.
We will assess your dental health and ask about any problems you’ve had with your teeth, mouth or gums since your last checkup.
Create a treatment plan to treat any dental problems that have been identified.
We can give you advice on improving your dental health and keeping your teeth in great shape.
How often should I have a dental check-up and cleaning?
After your dental check-up, our dentist will recommend any further treatment that you might need.
If your teeth and gums are healthy we will give you a date for your next visit. This will be in about 6 months time for most patients.
Regular check-ups and cleaning appointments mean healthier teeth!

What’s a scale and polish?
Gum disease is caused by plaque bacteria building up on your teeth. Proper brushing helps keep plaque at bay. But plaque can still build up on your teeth over time, no matter how well you brush. Plaque can cause bleeding gums, bad breath, and gum disease.
If left untreated gum disease can result in tooth loss! So it’s important to get your teeth cleaned regularly.
What to expect from a scale and polish dental cleaning
The first stage removes the plaque and tartar that builds up on your teeth. An ultrasound scraper is used to remove most of the tartar, followed by specialised instruments to remove the remaining tartar and plaque.
The second stage is to ‘polish’ the teeth. Polishing removes stains leaving teeth clean, bright and shiny. Polishing also makes it harder for plaque build up on your teeth.
Our dentist will advise you how often you should have a scale and polish. It’s normally every 6 months.
